Library of Music

Reading is the work of the alert mind, is demanding, and under ideal conditions produces finally a sort of ecstasy.
— E.B. White

The addition of snatches of music to his history of the United States startled the admirers of Samuel Eliot Morison, but as someone who was the least Harvard professor to arrive for classes on horseback, author of 15 volumes of American World War II naval history, and recipient of 11 honorary doctorates, he wasn’t anyone to quarrel with. Moreover, although his effort in incorporating lyrics was modest, he certainly was right that it is impossible in these times to study a society without reference to its arts. PSO publishes the Popular Culture Review as one of its contributions to the expanding conversation about the place of the arts in scholarship, as well as Sculpture Review. Just what the contributions of rousing marches like the Battle Hymn of the Republic have made to military history or the Star Spangled Banner to patriotism, or the Ode to Joy to the European Community will be for our scholar readers to decide. In any event, the Westphalia music collection permits purchase of multiple copies of scarce titles should a choir or lodge be looking for copies that will not assault the pocketbook.
