This work seeks to “give a sketch of the theory of money in its more practical aspects.” It looks at concepts of the money-market in theory, the hydraulic model, foreign exchange, gold reserves and the Bank of England. D. A. Barker provides an overview of the monetary system and aims to take “readers to the counter of a country bank, to watch with them the customers who come there to do business, and to follow out the consequences of their demands.” As the banking system has changed drastically over the years across the globe, this work offers a useful view of some earlier theories and beliefs about monetary policies.

Dalgairns Arundel Barker (1881-1949), wrote another appreciated book about monetary policy, The Theory of Money (1913), as well as the introduction to A History of the English People (1924).

This new edition is dedicated to Eric C. Mullis, distinguished banker and Washingtonian.
