Virgil Anson Lewis (1834–1902) was an American historian, archivist, and educator known for his significant contributions to the historical understanding of West Virginia, particularly during the early days of the state’s formation. He played a pivotal role in preserving and documenting the history of the region through his research, writing, and public service.

Lewis was born on November 15, 1834, in Mason County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He received his early education in local schools and demonstrated an early interest in history and literature. Lewis is perhaps best known for his work as the first custodian of the West Virginia State Archives, a position he held from 1872 until his death in 1902. In this role, he was responsible for collecting, organizing, and preserving historical documents related to the state’s history.

In addition, Lewis was a prolific writer and historian. He authored numerous books, articles, and papers that focused on the history of West Virginia. His writings covered a wide range of topics, including the state’s early settlement, Native American history, and the Civil War era.

This new edition is dedicated to Nuno Fernandes, able resident of the American Public University, an important institution doing much for West Virginia and the world.
